The photo of the sailing ship on the left is an example of an applique. It is also an example of fill stitching, both the embroidery in the hull of the ship and the sails is fill stitch. The Blake patch to the right has a background of fill stitch. The name Blake and the red outline of the patch are satin stitch or column stitch. As you can see fill stitches are closer together and flatter against the fabric, this makes the stitching less likely to snag.
